Three amazing hotels

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa

Anchoring the south end of Ka’anapali Beach and looking out toward the island of Lana’i, the Hyatt Regency Maui offers a slice of heaven along an active waterfront. Spectacular landscaping like rocky swan-filled enclaves, grottoes, waterfalls and manicured jungle-gardens fill much of its 50 acres (20 hectares). The grounds are also home to flamingos, swans, parrots and penguins. An impressive Pacific Rim art collection adds sophistication throughout the property.

Dining options include Umalu, which serves contemporary Hawaiian cuisine for lunch and dinner, Son’z Maui at Swan Court, which wins awards for its Continental and Pacific Rim food and Japengo, which provides an updated representation of a Japanese fishing village and serves Asian fare. A food court is available by the pool. The bar in the atrium appears to float in a koi pond, and waterfalls curtain the grotto bar.

A library, game room, health club, six tennis courts and water sports facilities are scattered about. On the beach side of the lobby, an elaborately landscaped hill slopes down to a half-acre (.2-hectare) freshwater lagoon with a 150-foot (46-meter) waterslide. Two waterfalls separate an adult-only swimming pool from a children-only option. A complimentary, on-site, 90-minute wildlife tour featuring 50 exotic birds is offered every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning. Located at the northern end of the property, the comprehensive spa provides nearly a dozen treatment rooms, as well as seaside settings for massage and body work. The hotel’s gleaming 55-foot (17-meter) catamaran takes guests on snorkeling and sailing excursions in style.

Accommodations convey deluxe standards with tropical appointments, quality fabrics and custom plantation-style furniture. Sitting areas provide armchairs and ottomans. Among the niceties are plump, pillow-top Grand Beds with bedside reading lamps, phones, MP3 players, coffeemakers, irons and ironing boards, and digital alarm clocks. Closets supply kimonos, slippers, flashlights and drawer space. Baths offer vanities cloaked in travertine, good lighting and plenty of mirrors.

“I have a really special feeling in my heart for Maui. Obviously this is my fifth time here, one as a player, three as an assistant coach. This is the first time I'm honored to bring the team here as a head coach. But even before that, when I was a young kid and this tournament used to come on TV, I can remember thinking college basketball is finally back. This was always, for me, the tournament that signified that college basketball, which was something I loved from a very early age, was back. To be here and to be a part of it is just a huge honor.”

“This is the tournament. This is the tournament we all pine to be a part of for a whole host of reasons, starting with the competition, but with the ambience, and where you are, and the hospitality, the professionalism that it's run with. All eyeballs in America will be on this tournament. We know that, you know that, our players know that, and they’re very excited to be here. It’s a great, great field, and I said this to our local media and I’ll say it again. I think this tournament will produce multiple NCAA Tournament participants, and it has a chance to produce some folks to not only get in, but make deep advances.”
—Former San Diego Head Coach Steve Fisher
